About Us

Alexander Family

We (Randy and Leigh Alexander) started our business 25 years ago as Community Development Services (CDS) when we provided services extending beyond our current focus on housing, environmental testing, contractor training to work safely with lead-based paint (LBP) and administering federal/state funded grants or aspects thereof.

In 2014 we incorporated as CDS Inspection & Beyond, Inc., to advertise to the public that our housing and environmental services are available to anyone requesting what we offer, and our services are not limited to grant-related activities.  Today we perform many asbestos, radon, mold and LBP inspections/testing to private citizens who have concerns about the health of their homes or they need to demolish a dilapidated structure, and an asbestos inspection is required by the State prior to any demolition.   Our service area is the State of Nebraska and others where State specific certification is not required.  Leigh travels all over the country performing radon testing.

Another service near and dear to us is training contractors to work safely with lead-based paint which is often present on pre-1978 houses.  We have personally experienced the negative effects and long-term consequences of undiagnosed lead poisoning of both an adult and a child in our family before we had any training on LBP.  Lead poisoning is entirely preventable, so we work hard to educate homeowners and contractors about the dangers of lead dust often generated during renovations, so others do not have to suffer the symptoms that accompany lead exposure and poisoning.

We extend a heartfelt thanks to our dedicated staff, communities and housing organizations that have utilized our services and for making the past 25 years possible.

When we are not working, we enjoy spending time with our friends, 3 children and their spouses/partners, our 4 grandsons and 3 dogs.  As with most small business owners, we wish we had more free time to see family and friends.  Finally, finding the time to ride motorcycles and relax would be pleasures in life that we haven’t been able to do much in the last few years.

Randy and I celebrated our 35th wedding anniversary in 2024.  I was greeted with 10 baby chicks as my gift 2 years ago (I certainly didn’t know CHICKENS were on the list for the 33rd anniversary!) Our 3+ decades together have given us not only 3 wonderful children, but also 4 grandsons, and we are so thankful for the healthy and happy additions to our family.  I was greeted with 10 baby chicks as my anniversary gift 2 years ago (I certainly didn’t know CHICKENS were on the list for traditional 33rd anniversary presents!)  We ended up purchasing more chickens, as did our son, and with the price of eggs, we are so glad we did.  We have farm fresh eggs for our children’s families’, and they have made a huge difference for one of our daughters and her partner because they could not eat store bought eggs.  I grew up in Fort Worth and never in my wildest dreams imagined we would raise our kids on a farm, I would have chickens, pheasants and ducks (we added to the collection) and be thrilled about it!  I can drive all our farm equipment, except our semi and combine.  We hobby farm on land that has been in Randy’s family for 3 generations and it takes all of us because we do this on top of our full-time business with CDS.

Other major changes in our lives include 1 of our 3 children moved back to Plainview in 2021 where he and his family are minutes away from us – and this includes those 4 adorable boys!  Our older daughter lives on a small acreage outside of Omaha and our younger daughter and her husband bought a home and live in Omaha.  All of our children and their families are thriving, so we thank God that we are among the fortunate.

When we started CDS we had no idea where it would take us.  We just wanted to own our business where we would have an opportunity to control our schedules so we could attend all our children’s activities.  Twenty-five years later we have no regrets about the decision to take control of our lives.  Running a small business has taken many hours of work for our entire family, but we get to decide when we work so we can focus on those most dear to us.

We thank all of you who have contacted us for services and hope that you will pass our contact information along if you were satisfied.  If you were NOT satisfied, please let us know so we can resolve any concerns. We wish all of you the best in health and happiness.

Randy brings 25+ years of experience in the construction field to his role as a home and environmental inspector.  After years in the behavioral health field, Leigh joined forces with Randy in 2000 and began her inspection career with environmental testing.  Now both Randy and Leigh are certified in the home inspection field, and hold all the necessary certifications to perform asbestos, radon, lead paint and mold inspections.  Leigh is also certified to work with schools as an asbestos management planner and serves as the principal instructor for the EPA Lead Renovator Certification courses provided by CDS.
