Asbestos

Did you know there are regulations in Nebraska that require you to do inspections before you demolish or perhaps even before you renovate a structure?  See below for some of these regulations that, while inconvenient, are there to protect you.  (We know most everyone in a developed nation has seen the TV commercials about what to do if you or a family member suffers from an asbestos related illness – the reason for this is that asbestos is nasty stuff that can really cause harm.  Don’t take this information lightly.)

Do you need to demo your house, business or outbuildings?  Did you know that the State of Nebraska requires that you have an asbestos inspection performed on any structure to be demolished?  Contact our office and we’ll be happy to set up an appointment to perform this asbestos inspection for you.  If we find asbestos, we’ll identify the steps you need to take to ensure safe removal.  Not all asbestos removal requires the services of a certified abatement contractor.  You may be able to do this yourself or hire a non-certified contractor to do the removal.  We’ll help guide you so that you stay safe and follow the regulations.  Avoiding this inspection to save money may end up costing you big in the end.  Sometimes the red-tape and hoops through which you have to jump are worth the effort.

Are you planning a renovation that might disturb asbestos?   Contractors who plan to disturb more than 3 square or 3 linear feet of asbestos are required to file a report with the State prior to this disturbance.  But how do you know if you have asbestos in your home?  Do you have floor covering or pipe wrap or insulation that resembles any of the pictures following the text below?  If so, you may have asbestos in your home.  Asbestos is a heat-resistant fibrous material that has been used in many construction and insulating materials because it is sturdy and withstands high temperatures.  But the same fibers that made it a popular building material are also dangerous to your health and can cause several lung diseases, including mesothelioma and asbestosis.

Please plan before you renovate or demo.

“Is asbestos in schools?”

Yes, many schools still have asbestos in a variety of their building materials.  Any school that has asbestos containing building materials is required to have these materials monitored on a 6-month basis and re-inspected every three years.  Leigh is a Nebraska Certified Management Planner and works with schools to ensure their compliance with asbestos regulations and to help make sure kids, staff and school workers are protected from asbestos exposure.
