Lead Services

​​If there is anything that you take away from this page, we hope it is your understanding that lead and the problems associated with exposure to it are NOT a thing of the past.

If you live in a home built before 1978, CDS Inspections & Beyond is available to provide lead testing services using a state of the art x-ray flourescence device (XRF or “lead gun”). Our lead gun does not scratch or mar any surface while testing and gives immediate results.  This lead-testing instrument is both a rare and valuable resource in rural Nebraska.  Knowing if you have lead in your home and whether or not it is posing a risk to you and your family is a key first step to peace of mind regarding the health of your home.

Use of lead-based paint and lead-based surface coatings (such as stains and vanishes) was prohibited in residential dwellings starting in January of 1978.  So, if you live in a home built BEFORE 1978, there is the very real possibility that you have lead in your home.  It has been almost 40 years since lead was last used in homes and many components coated with lead have been removed or replaced.  However, this is certainly not necessarily the case.  And, painting over lead paint does not eliminate it from your home.

There is a tremendous amount of literature available on the hazards of lead and the biggest focus of this information is on the devastating health effects lead can have on children under the age of 6 (including those still in their mother’s womb).  For detailed information on lead and how to protect you and your family, please visit the EPA’s page on lead.  Adults beware.  Lead is not just a problem for kids.

Leigh offers training certification classes to contractors to provide information on how to perform renovations in a lead-safe manner in homes build before 1978.  See Lead Renovator Certification Training link on this site.  The EPA requires this certification for contractors working on pre-1978 homes.
